Ryan Mallett, ex-Arkansas QB and NFL player, passed away at 35. He was also a high school football coach.
Mallett was discovered not breathing by lifeguards at a beach in Destin, Florida. The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office mentioned Mallett was among a group struggling to return to the shore.
Efforts were made to revive him but Mallett was pronounced dead at the Destin Emergency Room.
Mallett began his college career at Michigan, then transferred to Arkansas, where he excelled
Under Coach Petrino, Mallett led Razorbacks to an 8-5 record and Liberty Bowl victory in 2009.
His peak season was 2010, throwing for 3,869 yards, 32 touchdowns and earning second-team All-SEC honors. Mallett also ranked seventh in the 2010 Heisman Trophy vote.
Mallett had brief stints in New England and Houston before moving to the Baltimore Ravens through 2017.
The New England Patriots expressed their deep sorrow over the unexpected passing of former quarterback Mallett.
Mallett's NFL career included 21 games, 8 starts, and he passed for 1,835 yards, with 9 touchdowns.
In 2022, Mallett became the head football coach at White Hall High School, following a stint as an assistant at Mountain Home High School.
